Mint.com: Personal finance manager for your iPhone

I know for sure, we can’t stay far away from finance activity, right? But now we can “hire” a personal finance manager to handle such activity: Mint.com application, a new and free iPhone application . Seems this app is worth trying. This application lets you check balances, budgets, transactions, and investments anywhere. All this information is synchronized with your Mint.com account automatically. Security issues aside , it’s a good first start for Mint, and for regular Mint users this is yet another way to get at things like your budget and accounts without having to rely on your bank offering a site that can be accessed on mobile devices. The alerts are also very handy and can tell you if a credit card bill is close to being due, if you’re spending more than usual, or if there have been large deposits or withdrawals into your various accounts. For those things alone, it’s worth downloading the app, just be sure to flip on your iPhone’s built-in security lock feature. Has anyone tried this app? How useful is it? Anything particular on security issues? Please kindly share here. [via The Download Blog ]

New patent outlines multi-touch swipe gestures for iPhone keyboard

Wow. A new patent application for iPhone during Christmas holiday! The new patent called Swipe Gestures for Touch Screen Keyboards and creditted to Wayne Westerman. Seems it’s very useful additions to the iPhone’s on screen keyboard. But MacRumors says that Westerman multi-touch patent applications “always seem to be more ambitious than practical”. Swipe down = return For example , erasing and basic punctuation insertion, directional swipes (also referred to herein as “swipe gestures”) over the alphabetic keys can be used as an alternative to striking certain keys. Because the Space and Backspace keys are quite frequently used, they are logical candidates for the rightward and leftward swipes, respectively. Leftward and rightward swipes intuitively match the cursor travel caused by these symbols. Following this cursor movement analogy, the Enter/Return may be invoked by a downward swipe, and a Shift/Caps may be invoked by an upward swipe. Alternatively, as the Enter and Shift functions may be less frequently invoked, these may be substituted for other functions as well. One alternative mapping for the upward swipe, for example, could be to activate an alternative numeric and punctuation keypad or a particular punctuation symbol like an apostrophe or period. Swipe left = delete Unfortunately, there’s still no copy-and-paste function.

AT&T now offering an iPhone 3G for only $99!

It was not long ago that AT&T was offering refurbished iPhone 3Gs for a considerably high amount of money considering it is for a phone that was purchased, found defective and then returned and fixed. The prices were $149 for the 8GB version and $249 for the 16GB version. Now the day after Christmas we expect to see low prices being offered by all sorts of companies, if you take a trip over to the AT&T Wireless website you will come across a $99 iPhone 3G! Now we know that his is the very most basic model and indeed a refurbished iPhone 3G, but it shows that a $99 iPhone is indeed possible. With an iPhone being offered at $99 where does that leave the rumored iPhone Nano? The price would be so close that not many customers would not try and save the money and go with anything less than the full iPhone 3G. The $99 price tag is only available with the signing of a new two-year agreement. [Via SlashGear ]

Beta Beat: BlackBerry Media Sync for OS X

Filed under: Multimedia , Software , iTunes , Beta Beat Back in September, we started hearing rumblings that RIM was developing native OS X utilities for Mac BlackBerry users. Finally, RIM has released a preview version (on 12/19) of its BlackBerry Media Sync utility for OS X . It’s no Desktop Manager, but at least it is a start. BlackBerry Media Sync is designed to let you easily sync iTunes playlists (minus any DRM files) with your BlackBerry device. In August, PocketMac added a similar feature to its software , which is available for free from RIM’s web site for all BlackBerry owners. Basically, BlackBerry Media Sync will let you use your BlackBerry as an iPod shuffle (again, with the caveat that any iTunes DRM songs will not transfer to your BlackBerry). You can sync specific playlists or just have the free space automatically filled by your music collection. There are some things you need to be aware of: If you have another BlackBerry syncing utility, like PocketMac or The Missing Sync installed, it will stop working after installing BlackBerry Media Sync. You will need to uninstall BlackBerry Media Sync and probably reinstall your other software to regain functionality. It is slow. At least in my tests, syncing using the BlackBerry Media Sync app was slower than just dragging an album/playlist over to the BlackBerry’s Music folder in Finder. When you sync, it seems to re-transfer playlists all over again, even if they haven’t changed. Still, we finally have a native RIM utility for OS X. Hopefully a full-fledged Desktop Manager is in the future. Thanks Justen! First Look: FontShuffle puts FontShop in your pocket

Filed under: Graphic Design , App Store If, like me, you do a lot of your font shopping at FontShop , you’re sure to love FontShuffle. FontShuffle is like having a copy of the indispensable FontShop catalog right on your iPhone or iPod touch. I know my dog-eared copy from 2002 needs to be updated and/or retired: FontShuffle is a nifty, free replacement. It’s ideal for situations where you know what look you want, but don’t know what font to use. FontShuffle lets you choose from six major classifications of type: sans serif, serif, slab serif, script, blackletter, and display. Tap one, and FontShuffle shows you six more sub-categories to choose from. Tap one of those, and you’re presented with six selections from the FontShop catalog based on the look you selected. If none of the fonts fit the bill, press “Shuffle” or simply shake the device to get six more fonts. Tapping a font lets you view a customizable string of text in that font, and even save a picture of the text to your device’s camera roll. Rotating the screen displays a specimen. Unfortunately, FontShuffle can be frustrating if you know what font you’re looking for, as there’s no search tool. You have to shuffle through page after page of fonts until it comes up in a random selection. Also, FontShuffle doesn’t contain FontShop’s entire catalog. They promise to add more fonts in upcoming versions. FontShuffle is free, and available from the App Store . It’s a must-have for any type geek or designer that needs a font reference handy. Quick App: Bow Cam for iPhone

An app that barks at a dog to get it’s attention so it can then snap the dog’s picture? Now that’s some cunning canine camera creativity right there. We imagine, however, a barking dog might get the attention of all sorts of other snap-able subjects. Bow Cam comes from Appliya, a Tokyo based iPhone developer house. We’re hoping to see more from them, but we’ve also heard that waiting in the increasingly long line for app approval is even more problematic internationally, with some iTunes branch reps simply telling devs to contact the US for support (regardless of language differences.) Let’s hope the post-holiday season slows down a little, Apple adds both staff and a modicum of transparency, and the process as a whole matures into 2009, b’okay? Tried Bow Cam on your pooch? (or prowler?) Let us know how it worked for you! This is a story by the iPhone Blog . This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store . Quick App: Bow Cam for iPhone
