The iPhone Dev Team recently streamed a live video demonstrating an unlock of the iPhone 3G . They chose to stream the video so that no questions to the authenticity would arise. Before demonstrating yellowsn0w, a member of the iPhone Dev Team by the name of MuscleNerd streamed a video explaining that the notch cut out of his SIM card was not a part of the unlock, but was used for earlier development. Pinger is a new application that allows users to stay connected to friends in a number of ways using social networking services such as MySpace, Twitter and Facebook. Users can use Pinger to see the IM status of their friends and elect to call, text, instant message, email or even send a Facebook, MySpace or Twitter message, all from one simple menu. Among all the rumors of the new iPhone Nano a photo that claimed to be the actual device surfaced. Later some photos that looked remarkably like the iPhone Nano surfaced of a knockoff device being currently sold in Thailand. The boxing of this knockoff device is identical to that of the original iPhone 3G. Snapture has managed to bring Xenon Flash to the iPhone 3G for the first time ever. Now the iPhone 3G is available to virtually anybody who would like one. Thanks to Citrix Receiver, Windows users can use Windows apps in their iPhone 3G . Citrix allows users to access their PCs Microsoft Windows operating systems from a remote location. Owing to, as Tom Lehrer would say, nepotism and intrigue , I found myself in the small town of Brenham, Texas, this Sunday on the very day that Apple’s iPhone was to go on sale at the Wal-Mart mega-chain (an outfit that I, as a native New Yorker, have had very little experience with). Popping in to check out the action and snag some photos, I found a single iPhone display — it would be generous to call it a kiosk — with an activated iPhone and a handful of brochures. The price tags on display gave both the new customer/upgrade price, as well as the full retail price. A small paper sign taped to the wall announced that iPhone sales would commence at 9:00 am, and that customers should line up for access to limited stock. I asked a sales clerk about first-day sales, and she said as far as she knew they hadn’t sold a single unit so far, “but maybe if they had started selling it before Christmas…” There was, however, a steady stream of gawkers checking out the display unit in the 10 or so minutes I spent in the electronics department.
